The Whakahā Experience

Days here find
their own rhythm

Mornings cooking with local produce. Afternoons exploring the river or disappearing into thousand-year-old tōtara forest. Evenings stretch long around the fire. Thoughtful touches let you exhale. Everything you need is here, so you can focus on being present with the people who matter most.

The Place

Restore yourself

Whakahā means
to breathe out

You come to the end of your drive. The phones quiet. The light softens. You set your bags down, and you feel your shoulders drop.

Your private riverside sanctuary

Step onto the land and exhale. Breathe in the clear air scented with native bush and feel it on your skin. This is a place where peace and play coexist.

Near yet far

A rural
retreat in South
Canterbury

Only 1 hour 45 minutes' drive from Christchurch. 15 minutes from the small-town charm of Geraldine. Minutes from the forest and the river. An eternity away from the bustle and stress of day-to-day life.

Gather together

Made for the trips that matter

Whakahā is built for gatherings you’ll remember. A milestone birthday or anniversary. Adult children home from overseas. Your first grandchild's first holiday. A reunion with old friends you’ve been talking about for years.

Bring the whole
family together

Three generations under one roof in a house that holds you gently, everything anticipated, nothing to arrange. Slow-cooked lamb in the crockpot when you arrive. The cot in the room. The bath on the deck where you can hear the river just down the short track. A sense of coming home.

Gather old friends
together

It's been too long since you were all in one place. You don't want endless logistics. You want space to breathe in a place that makes it easy to relax. Whakahā is a fully provisioned retreat. Cook together if you feel like it. Read on the deck if you don't, and watch the light move across the hills.

Ride, hunt or fish
together

For friends who want time in the saddle, with grazing so horses can come too. For mates who want long hours in the hills or on the river.

The rhythm of the day is yours. Mornings can begin slowly with coffee or head out at dawn if you choose. When you return, the house welcomes you. Boots off. Fire lit. Drinks poured. Talk for hours. Sleep deeply.
